When I was house hunting in France a few years ago, the two things on my “must have” list were a building in which to put a swimming pool so I could get some exercise and enough land so that about 4-5 motor caravans could park overnight. I was hoping that this would earn me a small income but failing that, at least all our motor caravanning friends would be able to come and stay.

What I eventually bought did have the building for the pool but not quite so much land as planned. Altogether there was 3000 square metres but that included the land the buildings were on and they were rather large. The house covers 200 sq metres and so does the barn. Then there is the pool which is another 100 sq metres.

So decisions had to be made about the beautiful lawn. Would we buy a ride on mower or just a walk behind one? We decided to wait and see what decisions we came to over what to actually do with the land.  A strimmer was purchased and it did the job quite adequately for a while.  Then the pool was installed and all the soil that was dug out was then spread over the land to try and make it slightly more level.  The soil was full of stones, no, not pebbles, stones.  Most of them are at least 6 inches long by about 6 inches circumference.  This did not bode well for a motor mower of any sort really.  Just imagine a large stone like that flying up and hitting someone or a window.

My job each night after the pool contractor had returned home was to go out and pick up as many of the large stones as possible and put them in the barn.  Quite hot work for that time of year. Oh how I wished he would hurry and finish making the pool so I could jump in it.

We eventually had grass grow back on the area where the soil had been placed but there are still lots of stones around.  We decided that the strimmer would have to do us for a while longer until we managed to get the land smoothed out a bit.

Then along came a neighbour to inform us that they were returning to UK to live and did we want to buy a few of their things.  Among them was a ride on mower. Well! Who could resist the thought of sitting on a tractor to do the lawns instead of slaving away with a strimmer?  Certainly not us.  So we bought it.

My husband thought he had died and gone to heaven, it was so much easier and quicker to mow the lawns now.  The decision had been made for us really.  We would not have purchased a ride on yet because of the cost and the state of the grounds but when offered one on a plate for a reasonable price, would you have said no?  Didn’t think so.

Sometimes the answer comes to you easily, other times it has to be thrust upon you.  Ride on mower, petrol mower, electric one, maybe a strimmer or just an old fashioned push mower?  Your decision.
